Safe early warning system against fire

08. Aug 2014

The Security Essen opens its doors from 23 – 26 September 2014 as the world’s leading trade fair for security and fire protection in Essen. DIAS Infrared GmbH presents in hall 1.0, stand 416 system solutions for early fire detection in different scenarios under the motto “With wits against fire”.
Landfills can bring high risks. Risks to the environment and of course the operators consist in the possible self-ignition of stored materials. In the mining hall of the former hazardous waste landfill Kölliken in Switzerland – the country’s largest hall – there was such a fire during the demolition landfill. This resulted in the revision of the entire security concept. The standards for the protection of personnel and environment were significantly increased in order to prevent future damage.

A permanent monitoring system equipped with highly sensitive infrared cameras from DIAS Infrared GmbH is a fundamental part of the concept. Through a continuous, automatic temperature measurement, smoldering or smoldering fires can now be detected and eliminated early. High-resolution thermal imaging cameras are used to monitor the 46,000 m2 excavation hall. The monitors of the fire detection system display the thermographic images of the infrared cameras in a black and white scale: Dark areas indicate cold areas, bright areas however high temperatures. In case of alarm the areas discolor into red where the predefined temperature is exceeded. Thus, a potential source of fire is identified immediately. At night, the entire mining hall is monitored automatically and continuously reported alarm events immediately to the fire department.

In Kölliken twelve high-resolution thermal imaging cameras are in use that measure in the spectral range 8-14 microns. The PYROVIEW 380L protection with pan-tilt head and further 21 smaller solid matrix cameras monitor the landfill safer as a security guard can do. All units are equipped with an efficient air purging unit that prevents dirt. With a central software PYROSOFT FDS, DIAS has created a system in which all information can run together and be evaluated. A modern client / server architecture allows the simultaneous access of several observation stations with large screen or simple local PCs for individual sections.

In addition to the project solution in Switzerland DIAS already installed numerous other systems, for example for the environmental services Burgenland (Austria) and a waste incineration plant of the company Uddevalla Energi AB in Sweden. The DIAS-fire detection system also offers extra protection against forest fires within the project “Sustainable forest management and environmental protection in national park Pirin, Bulgaria”.
